Michael G. Oxley Fund

In April 2006, Miami University established the Center for Business Excellence at the Farmer School of Business. Brian Ballou and Dan Heitger, faculty in the Department of Accountancy, were named as co-directors of the Center.

Miami University is pleased to announce the creation of the Michael G. Oxley Fund as the primary source of funding for the Center. The Fund is part of Miami’s For Love and Honor capital campaign. Donations to the Michael G. Oxley Fund are now being solicited and can be made throughout the coming year.

One of Miami’s most prominent alumni, Michael G. Oxley, class of 1966, has dedicated his career to public service, including 33 years in elected office. Miami University will build upon Congressman Oxley’s excellent reputation for protecting investors, promoting fair competition, and fighting against fraudulent, unethical, negligent, and terrorist actions in business. Miami University is proud of Congressman Oxley’s career in public service as a Special Agent of the FBI, Member of the Ohio General Assembly, and Congressman in the United States House of Representatives, culminating with his pivotal role in creating the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002

The following positions and initiatives will be created through the Michael G. Oxley Fund:

  • Michael G. Oxley Chaired Professors of Governance, Risk Management and Reporting
  • Michael G. Oxley Scholars working as interns in Washington, D.C. through Miami’s Inside Washington Program
  • Michael G. Oxley Research and Curriculum Development Grants for Miami University and external faculty
  • Michael G. Oxley Lecturer Series presenting to students at Miami University
  • Michael G. Oxley Executive Conferences, Workshops, and Executive Education Programs involving executives and those individuals charged with corporate governance

Funding of these initiatives will help Miami University’s Center for Business Excellence emerge as the academic thought leader in linking corporate governance, enterprise risk management, and transparent business reporting. While there are other centers in the country that investigate these issues in isolation, no university emphasizes the importance of integrating these three important aspects to better manage organizations in the dynamic, complex global business environment of the 21st century. The new Center’s reputation will be earned through learning and collaboration between business leaders, regulators, academicians, and students.
