At the Center for Social Entrepreneurship, we are dedicated to promoting the idea of social entrepreneurship as a mechanism to change the world and to level the playing field through the advancement of teaching, research and practice of social entrepreneurship.

[ So•cial en•tre•pre•neur•ship ] Innovative solutions to persistent social problems – particularly to those that are marginalized or poor – that create social value through sustainable systemic change.

History

The Center for Social Entrepreneurship was founded in 2006 by Dr. Brett Smith. The Center is focused on creating hands-on, experiential learning at the undergraduate level with an overall mission to develop an integrated program around the teaching, research, and practice of social entrepreneurship.

Innovative Partnerships

The Center has engaged in a number of innovative partnerships to facilitate our missions of teaching, research and practice of SE. These examples include: Edun Live on Campus, Social Entrepreneur Corps, and the Center for Community Engagement in Over the Rhine.

Professor Brett Smith lectures in Milan, Italy on micro-consignment model

Center for SE forms alliance with Latin American development agency

Fomer Miamian and Ashoka Fellow, Greg Van Kirk, has recently partnered with the Center for Social Entrepreneurship through Community Enterprise Solutions. The alliance seeks to: provide students with the experience of a real-world social venture, send students to developing areas of Latin America, and complete research initiatives.

Miami University hires Katie Mulligan as Assistant Director of Social Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurship Department hired Katie Mulligan as the new Assistant Director for the Center for Social Entrepreneurship. As a recent Miami graduate, Mulligan brings a marketing background and entrepreneurial spirit to the position. Her primary responsibilities will be the international expansion of the Edun Live on Campus program; including building strategic partnerships, developing a sales/marketing plan, and development of social media strategy. She will also assist in development of a strategic plan for the Center for Social Entrepreneurship, initiation and management of relationships and initiatives, and management of the social entrepreneurship annual lecture series. Mulligan brings a full-time committment to the Center and we look forward to having her dedication strengthen the Social Entrepreneurship program.

Edun Live on Campus expands to other universities

Edun Live on Campus is a socially conscious apparel business that seeks to provide sustainable employment in Africa by penetrating the college market. The project is an example of how social entrepreneurship utilizes a business model to advance a social outcome while advancing hands-on experiential learning. After developing a successful pilot program, Edun Live on Campus is now rolling out to other campuses. Eleven campuses are currently enrolled. Learn more at www.edunliveoncampus.com.
