Graduate Awards
Assistance is available in several forms and is generally awarded to graduate students by individual departments, schools, and colleges on the basis of academic promise. Many opportunities are available for graduate assistant appointments for part-time teaching and research. Miami is noted for the amount of time graduate students may elect to teach in many departments. In fact, the opportunity to teach is cited by many graduate students as a primary reason for their choosing Miami.
- The department offers two graduate assistantships that currently pay about $9000 per year.
- Modified graduate assistantships are available that currently pay about $4000 per year. This amount may increase next year. These awards require eight hours of work per week and provide remission of the instructional fee.
- Minority Access to Education assistantships, for American minority students, carry a stipend ranging from $3,080 to $10,160 and include remission of the instructional fee and out-of-state surcharge.
- Graduate summer scholarships are granted, for summer study, to students who have held graduate assistantships or associateships during the previous academic year. Service-free graduate summer scholarships are awarded up to $1,800.
- Graduate grants-in-aid, for full-time graduate students, waive the instructional fee and out-of-tate tuition surcharge (if applicable). There are no stipend payments and no required duties. Deadline: March 1st. Applications are available through the Graduate School at (513) 529-4125 or gradschool@muohio.edu.
In addition to these awards administered through the Graduate School, the university funds several loan programs for graduate students. Qualified students may obtain federally guaranteed student loans and participate in the federal College Work-Study Program. Small short-term loans, supported by funds donated by alumni, faculty, and friends of the university, are also available.
