New Management Minor

The Management minor is designed for majors in the College of Arts and Science, School of Education, Health and Society, and the School of  Engineering and Applied Science. It has requirements that overlap with other majors, especially Dietetics, Economics (A&S), Psychology, Public Administration, Strategic Communications, Mass Communications,  Social Work, Pre-business, Environmental Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, General Engineering,  Paper Science and Engineering, and others.

The Management Minor is not available for Business Majors or Engineering Management Majors.

This minor requires you to fulfill MGT291 and MGT302 in the summer. Because of high demand, MGT291 and MGT302, are not available during fall or spring semesters.

Planning for Completion

Obviously, if some of the Management Minor requirements overlap with the requirements of your major, those courses double-count.  This is most likely the case for ECO201 and the introductory statistics course, but for some majors includes MGT291. MGT111 is only available to non-business majors and is taught fall and spring semesters, 4 sections each.  You should take MGT111 whenever you can fit it into your schedule. If MGT291 or MGT302 are required for your major, you will be able to take the class fall or spring semester.  If neither is required for your major, you will have to take them in the summer.

Many of the courses on the “Take two” list have some open spaces available during fall and spring semesters.  If you are flexible as to which of those courses you take, you have a much greater chance of being able to take one or two of them during fall and spring semesters.  If you have specific questions about the Management Minor, or the Management summer schedule, contact the Management Department office, 3056 FSB, 529-4215.

Accelerated Program

The Management Department will teach MGT291, 302, 303, and 304 during the summer of 2012. These courses will be on the new 4-week session schedule and will be taught according to the schedule below. This will enable students who have completed MGT111 and their statistics requirement to finish the Management Minor on July 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t Business majors and Engineering Management majors take this minor?
Having a “minor” in something means you have taken course work beyond your major, in another area.  The requirements for the Management Minor are already satisfied by taking the courses required for Business majors and Engineering Management majors.  So, it would not be additional work in another area.

Why will I have to take some of these courses in the summer? If you offer the minor, you should let me into the courses during Fall or Spring semester.
MGT291 and MGT302 are core courses required of all business majors.  If we allowed all Management Minors into those courses during Fall and Spring semesters, we would be forced to severely limit the number of Management Minors. This is done with some other minors at Miami.  That would exclude many students from the minor, even though some would have been willing to do it if they could take courses in the summer.  By not limiting the enrollment, but making sure everyone understand up front that they have to take some courses in the summer, more people are allowed to take the minor.

Dietetics

You already have to take MGT291, MGT303, and STA261. Take MGT111 anytime. You will have to take MGT302 during the summer, and take one other course from the “Take two” list. If it is ECO201, you could take it anytime.

Economics (A&S)

You already have to take ECO201 and STA261 (or DSC205).  Take MGT111 anytime. MGT291 and MGT302 will have to be taken during the summer. Take one other course from the “Take two” list.

Public Administration

You already have to take ECO201. MGT291 counts for Public Administration related hours, as will two of MGT402, MGT404, or MGT405. Take MGT111 and the appropriate introductory statistics course anytime.  MGT302 will have to be taken during the summer.

Strategic Communications

You already have to take STA261.  Take MGT111 anytime. Take MGT291and MGT302 during the summer.  Take two other courses from the “Take two” list.

Psychology

You already have to take STA261.  Take MGT111 anytime. Take MGT291and MGT302 during the summer.  Take two other courses from the “Take two” list.

Mass Communications

Take DSC205 or STA261 for your research methods. MGT291 and MGT303 count for your related hours.  Take MGT111 anytime.  MGT302 will have to be taken in the summer. You need one more courses from the “Take two” list.

Social Work

You already have to take ECO201 and STA261.  Take MGT111 anytime.  Take MGT291 and MGT302 during the summer.  You need one other course from the “Take two” list.

Pre-business

If you were a pre-business major, but are no longer majoring in business, You may have already taken DSC205, BUS101, and ECO201. Take MGT291 and MGT302 during the summer. You need one other course from the “Take two”  list.

Computer Engineering
