Grants & Leaves

General information on grants and leaves will come to you from the University Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (OARS) or the Dean's Office. To be included on a more specific mailing list for grant information, contact OARS at 9-3734. The links below contain a partial listing of ongoing opportunities and due dates for final submission of proposals. Details on procedures are in Appendix G of the University Manual online.

University Level

The Miami University Policy and Information Manual (MUPIM), contains sections that specify guidelines for assigned research leaves (ARLs), faculty improvement leaves (FILs), and research opportunities and support.

ARLs AND FILs Applications for assigned research leaves and faculty improvement leaves typically are due in the Dean's Office by early November and to the Provost's Office by early December. For further information about faculty leaves, contact the Department Chair and/or Ray Gorman (9-3631) and refer to Sections 3.6323 and 3.6325 of MUPIM.

DOLIBOIS GRANTS Calls for proposals for Dolibois Grants (1) for faculty development projects for the School's faculty and (2) for faculty of other divisions to "enhance their knowledge or understanding of the free enterprise or capitalistic system" are sent to all faculty by the University Secretary in early September. The deadline for such proposals is late October. For further information about Dolibois Grants, contact Ray Gorman (9-3631).

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FUND FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL This grant fund supports international travel to international conferences or professional meetings. A portion of the fund is set aside to encourage junior faculty to travel internationally. Requests for funding should be submitted to the Office of International Programs at least one month before the proposed travel date. HAMPTON FUND GRANTS FOR FACULTY INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES Hampton Fund grants offer support for projects with an international component that will add a global perspective to scholarship and teaching. Calls for proposals are sent to faculty in the fall. This year’s deadline is October 15. David Keitges, Director of International Education (9-5628), can provide further information. RESEARCH GRANTS Calls for proposals for University research grants and for curriculum/teaching grants are sent to all faculty in the early part of the first semester of each academic year by the OARS, the University's Committee on Faculty Research, and/or the University's Committee for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT). The deadline for such proposals is early October or November, depending on the grant program. VISITING OPPORTUNITIES AT THE LUXEMBOURG CAMPUS Faculty may serve one-semester appointments as visiting scholars/professors at the John E. Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. Visiting scholars use the Center as a base of research operations and are expected to contribute to the Center in some way during their stay. Visiting professors combine research with teaching one class at the Center or at the Centre Universitaire in Luxembourg. Division Level

The Farmer School of Business typically provides faculty development support for research grants and curriculum/teaching grants. Allocation of financial support for these grants is determined on a year-by-year basis.

These faculty development grants are awarded by the School's Research Committee, Teaching Effectiveness Committee, and program directors. For further information about these grants, see the FSB Grants section of the Farmer School website, or contact Ray Gorman 9-3631.

Department Level

Some departments award research grants and/or curriculum grants among their faculty from funds provided by or through the department. Calls for these grant proposals are announced by the departments in accordance with their governance. For further information about these grants, contact the department chairs.
