2009 Scholarship Information & Application

Scholarships: Scholarships available are listed below. Most are through the Farmer School of Business to students participating in one of the Farmer School Summer International programs. For all scholarships but one, students must show need.

Tip: Even if, according to the federal need formula, one did not have financial need in the fall and spring, the student is still encouraged to apply for financial aid in the summer. This is due to the way the federal formula calculates need in the summer. See the Office of Financial Aid in the CAB building for a FAFSA form.

Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To receive aid in the summer of 2009 students should have completed the 2008-09 FAFSA form.

Please note: Scholarships apply only to the student’s winter break or summer abroad tuition and will not be disbursed into the student’s Bursar account until the student registers for the workshop classes in December 2008 or May 2009.

Summer 2009 Scholarships

1. The Farmer School of Business scholarships: The Farmer School of Business has scholarships established especially for students participating in our international programs. All donors of these scholarships state that only students who are need-based may receive this money.

a) If you are interested in one of the FSB scholarships, complete the "Scholarship" section on the program application (the on line application found at www.fsb.muohio.edu/international/apply). All students completing the "Scholarship" section when applying to the programs, will be considered for one of the FSB Scholarships.

b) To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must show need.

c) To know if one has need, please see the Financial Aid office for a FAFSA form.

d) Applications and decisions are handled by the Farmer School of Business International Programs.

e) The scholarship amounts will be announced, when possible, in the acceptance letter. For students completing a FAFSA, awards will be made once need level is known. Usually no later than the end of February.

f) The scholarship money will be transferred to the student's Bursar account by the Financial Aid Office after the student has registered for the workshop classes.

2. Miami University Loan Information: www.units.muohio.edu/sfa/index.htm

a) Loans: While Miami does have low interest loans to offer students, one must have financial need to get these loans.

b) Again, even if, according to the federal need formula, a student did not have financial need in the fall and spring, the student is still encouraged to apply for financial aid in the summer. This is due to the way the federal formula calculates need in the summer.

c) To be considered for a university loan in the summer, students would need to take the following steps:

1). Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To receive aid in the summer of 2009 students should have completed the 2008-09 FAFSA form.

2).Complete a Summer Aid Application (a Miami form available from Student Financial Assistance).

3).Enroll in the summer courses. Usually it requires a minimum of 6 credit hours to get federal financial aid for summer school.

All students who take these steps will be considered for summer financial aid, which includes federal aid, university loans, and alternative loans (low interest loans from banks specifically intended for college students).

If a student is already receiving federal financial aid for the current year:

1. Summer financial aid awards will be based on any remaining eligibility from the school year.In most cases this will be a student loan and/or a Parent PLUS loan. A PLUS loan requires a separate application and a parent borrower will be subject to a credit check.

2. If student has no remaining eligibility and parents are unable to borrow, student can apply for an alternative loan. These generally carry higher interest rates, and student borrowers are subject to a credit check.
