Neither snow, nor sleet, nor missing luggage kept the Farmer School’s team from its appointed rounds at the annual John Molson MBA International Case Competition earlier this month.
During the high-pressure event that consisted of five case rounds in four days, Christopher Burton, Billy Elliott, Don Pingley , and Marek Stryjecki wore the same clothes they had traveled in, since their bags appeared to be on their own route and schedule. Health issues further raised the level of challenge.
At the end of the competition, which Burton called “the most intense and valuable academic experience of my life,” the Farmer School team ranked second in its division with a 4 win, 1 loss record, losing only to the University of South Carolina, the eventual champion.
This year's Miami team had more wins than any of their predecessors the past three years, and did themselves proud in the eyes of the judges and their fellow contestants. At the final banquet, the team was presented with the Richard Outcault Team Spirit Award, an honor reserved for the one team that overcame the most challenges and still delivered results at the highest level.
“This award is a significant recognition of the character of Team Miami,” said the Farmer School’s MBA director Brad Bays.
“When we accepted the Spirit Award, a member of a competing team mentioned to me that before coming to the competition, his coach told them, ‘You don't go there to win. You go there for the experiences,’” Pingley recalled. “I absolutely believe that the experience of competing and going through all of the cases will make us all better students, better business professionals and better overall presenters.”The Molson’s-sponsored event, which takes place annually in Montreal, invited teams from 36 MBA programs in Asia, Europe and North America to participate this year.
