Recent security breaches, weather-related disasters, global terror threats, and malfeasance in corporate governance provided many real-life examples for discussion during the second Executive Conference on Governance, Risk Management and Reporting. The event, held at Miami University April 26-28, earned high marks for both its content and the opportunities it afforded for attendees to exchange views, news and experiences.
U.S. Rep. Michael G. Oxley of Ohio was the keynote speaker. Presenters and panelists represented the banking, financial services, public utilities, retail, and consumer products manufacturing industries.
The conference was presented by the Farmer School’s Center for Governance, Risk Management and Reporting.
“We have professionals in the areas of risk management and reporting emphasizing how essential it is that today’s students understand the importance of these interrelated aspects of corporate governance,” said Dr. Brian Ballou, one of the center’s two directors. “There is no lack of examples to illustrate their importance.”
The majority of conference attendees were organizational managers responsible for risk management and sustainability matters. Joining them this year were 40 Farmer School Master’s of Accountancy students who had just completed a unique two-course sequence on governance, risk management, and reporting. The students participated in conference sessions and ran a panel discussion led by Paul Hinds, managing director for PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Global Risk Management Services in Cincinnati.
“Feedback by attendees suggested that the interaction among executives and Master’s students was the highlight of what attendees rated as an outstanding conference,” said center co-director Dr. Dan Heitger.
