Daniel Alvarez (Finance ‘06) is corporate treasury analyst for Jo-Ann Stores, Inc., based in Hudson, Ohio.

Ryan Brickley (Finance) has joined Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation in North Carolina as head golf professional. Prior to working at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation, Brickley worked at Ballantyne Country Club. Before that, he spent three years as director of instruction at NorthStone Country Club and two years as director of instruction at the Michael Jordan Golf Center.

Mike Butera (Accountancy) has been promoted to senior vice president and head of distribution strategy for Fifth Third Bancorp. The Loveland, Ohio resident joined Fifth Third in 2002; previously he was with Broadwing, Inc., Jay Industrial Technologies, and Arthur Anderson LLP.

Frank G. Castle (Accountancy ’66) is currently CFO of Andover Research in Boston. He earned a Ph.D. and has taught at the college level as well. I have lived, worked, and taught abroad for several years,” he writes. “If I do retire, I'll return to live in the Alps. Miami, its instructors, and my classmates all have been helpful to me in leading a positive and eventful working life.”

Gary L. Corderman (Business) has been selected to be a member of Sanguine Corporation’s management advisory team. Sanguine Corporation is a development stage bio-pharmaceutical company. Corderman has over 20 years of investment experience with companies such as Lord Abbett Mutual Funds, Watson Wyatt Consulting and Fidelity Investments Institutional.

David Dauch (Operations and Purchasing Management) was appointed president and chief operating officer of American Axle & Manufacturing, a manufacturer of driveline and drivetrain systems and related components for trucks and passengers. Dauch joined American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) in July 1995 as manager of sales administration. He was appointed director of sales for GM full-size truck programs in May 1996, and was named vice president of sales and marketing in August 1997. Dauch most recently served as executive vice president and COO.

Dan Fulton (Economics ’70) was promoted to CEO of the Weyerhaeuser Company. Fulton has been president of Weyerhaeuser Company since Jan. 1, 2008. Prior to assuming that role, he served as president and chief executive officer of Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company, a subsidiary of the company, since 2001. Fulton has been with Weyerhaeuser since 1975.

Douglas Gasper (Finance/Economics) has joined Weichert, Realtors-Hallmark Properties as a sales associate specializing in commercial sales.

David L. Hansen (MBA) has joined Diversified Search Ray & Berndtson as a principal in the firm’s Chicago office. Hansen has most recently been a managing consultant for the Industrial Markets Practice of Edward W. Kelley & Partners, Inc., formerly the executive search firm A.T. Kearney. His earlier career was in sales and marketing with a his own marketing research firm and, before that, with The Huttenlocher Group, a commercial insurance firm. He began his career at Bozell, Inc.

Christopher Hermance (Finance ’04) passed Level I of the CFA examination in June 2007 and sat for Level II in June. He is a global analyst for Loomis Sahyler & Co., L.P. in Boston.

Jesse Hunter (Finance) has been named executive vice president of corporate development for Centene Corp. In this position, he is responsible for business development opportunities, including mergers and acquisitions. Hunter, who has been with Centene since 2002, was promoted from his position as senior vice president of corporate development.

Jeffrey Litteken (Business) is a principal of General Ledger Resources, a staffing agency that specializes in placing temporary workers and full-time hires into accounting firms. He resides in San Diego, CA.

Bobby Maly (Marketing/English) is vice president of development for the Cincinnati real estate company Model Group. He is leading his company's involvement in the Gateway Quarter revitalization project with inner-city development group Cincinnati Center Development Corp (3CDC). The program is the first of its kind in Greater Cincinnati and targets the homeless population.

Gary McDaniel (Marketing/Economics) has been named senior vice president and general manager, plastics business for Exopack in Chicago, IL. McDaniel has 30 years of experience in the packaging industry, including serving as a past chairman of the Flexible Packaging Association. His most recent position was with Altivity Packaging (formerly Smurfit Stone Container, Inc.), where he served as vice president and general manager of their Flexible Packaging Division. McDaniel also serves on the Board of Directors of Oberweis Mutual Fund.

Bradley Meeks (Finance/MIS) is a stock analyst on the Business Property Services team of Chicago-based Morningstar, an independent investment research firm. Before joining Morningstar in January 2008, Meeks was a senior consultant at Deloitte & Touche LLP, part of the firm's Capital Markets Group. He is a candidate for CFA designation.

Jamie S. Miller (Accounting) was recently named vice president, controller and chief accounting officer at GE Corporate Finance. Prior to joining GE, she was senior vice president & chief accounting officer at WellPoint Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana and was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Chicago, Illinois. Miller is a CPA.

James Murphy (Finance ’97) is an assistant vice president and wealth management adviser at Merrill Lynch in downtown Cincinnati, and has been advising businesses and wealthy individuals for the past 12 years as a certified financial planner. Murphy graduated from Merrill Lynch's professional development training program in 2000.

Eric S. Nadeau (Business Administration) has been named executive vice president, treasurer, corporate secretary and CFO for Home Federal Bancorp, Inc. Nadeau, a certified public accountant, brings financial institution experience from earlier positions with Camco Financial Corporation, Advantage Bank, and Ohio Legacy Bank. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts, the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Financial Managers Society.

R. David Nein (Marketing ’75) is senior account executive with Medianet Innovations in Charlotte, North Carolina. He earned an MBA from Xavier University in 1985. Nein notes that his daughter, Cristin, will enter Miami this fall as a prospective marketing major, the third generation of her family to follow that path.

Dinesh C. Paliwal (MBA Finance) will assume the position of chairman and CEO for Harman International Industries July 1. Paliwal has served as president, CEO and vice chairman since joining the company in July 2007. Prior to that he was president of global power and automation technology leader of ABB Ltd, and served in many international locations. Currently, he serves on the boards of Embarq, Harman International and the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He has been a member of the US Business Roundtable since 2004 and served previously as International Economic Advisor to the Governor of Guangdong Province, China; Chairman of the US National Foreign Trade Council, Director of the US China Business Council and Director of the US India Business Council.

Elizabeth Parke (Marketing ’03) is manager of marketing and proposals for BDP International in Houston, Texas. She writes: “I recently traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, where I met with colleagues from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East to discuss the development and future of our global business entity.”

Kathleen Joyner Robb (Accounting/Finance ’05) is an accountant with Joyner Homes, LLC in Greenfield, IN. She and her husband are expecting a baby boy in September.

Michaella Bannister Schaller (Business ’86) is director, global supply chain, for Dana Holding Corp. in Toledo, Ohio.

Joseph R. Scherrbaum Jr. (Business Administration ’79) has been named vice president of sales and customer service for U.S. Steel’s, North American flat-roll operations. Scherrbaum's U.S. Steel career began in 1979. Since then he has risen within the company’s sales operations, serving in locations throughout the United States and expanding U.S. Steel’s presence in the European marketplace.

Suzette Silk (Business Administration) was appointed Director of Human Resources for the Ohio Catholic Federal Credit Union (OCFCU). Silk has over 15 years banking experience with companies such as National City Bank, Metropolitan Bank & Trust (now part of Huntington Bank), and Fifth Third Bank. Silk and her husband Paul and two children reside in Bainbridge Township, near Cleveland.

David Steinbach (Finance) has been named vice president of Jones Lang LaSalle. Based in the firm’s St. Louis office, he will handle landlord and tenant representation. Formerly with CB Richard Ellis, Steinbach has six years of tenant representation experience in Chicago and St. Louis. He has been named one of St. Louis’ “Heavy Hitters in Commercial Real Estate” by the St. Louis Business Journal.

Kara Zimmer Simmons (Human Resources Management ’00) is now IT asset management administrator for The Midland Co. in Cincinnati.

Bruce Thompson (Accountancy), Exactech senior vice president and general manager of Biologics, was named general manager of Biologics and Exactech Spine. Exactech Spine is the new name of the division created with the acquisition of Altiva Corporation earlier this year. Bruce joined Gainesville, Florida-based Exactech four years ago following a 22-year career at Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics that included serving as general manager of that firm's spine division.

I. Timothy Trombetta (Accountancy) has been appointed Vice President and Assistant Controller of the Aleris International, Inc. Trombetta joined Aleris in December, 2004 as the Director of External Reporting and currently serves as Director, Financial Planning and Analysis. Prior to joining Aleris, Trombetta was with Ernst & Young LLP for 12 years, rising to senior manager in the Assurance & Advisory Business Services practice.

Gregory C. Wagner (Business Administration) was appointed to the position of general manager, industrial coatings, Americas, for PPG Industries. In 1979, Wagner joined PPG as a production employee before completing his Miami degree. Wagner progressed through various PPG management roles in sales, marketing, product development and operations, moving to Paris in 1999 as director, industrial coatings, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. In 2004, he was appointed general manager, industrial coatings, Europe, and shortly thereafter moved to Cincinnati as general manager, packaging coatings, Americas.

Tim Wallace (Business) was named interim president and COO for MEDecision, Inc. Wallace has been a member of MEDecision's Board of Directors since March 2002. Prior to joining the company, Wallace was CEO of FullTilt Solutions. His experience includes senior executive roles at Xerox, The Waldec Group, and Arthur Anderson & Company.

Shane Woloshan (Marketing) has been promoted to vice president at Grubb & Ellis/Adena Realty Advisors in Columbus, OH. Woloshan specializes in industrial leasing, investment sales and tenant representation. He joined the company in 2004; before that, he was national account manager for Rapidigm, Inc.<'p>

In Memoriam

Rachel (Reaser) Pruet (Business ’57) passed away April 20, 2008.

George Van Riper Smith (Business Administration) died in Savannah, GA on June 17 after a long illness. He earned a Master’s degree in Communications from the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania and served with the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet from 1961-64. He worked as a reporter, columnist, and editor for several newspapers, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; he also taught at Georgia State University.

Edwin “Ed” Calvin Sparen (Business Administration) of Grand Rapids, MN, died June 13. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a fighter pilot in the Atlantic theater, then graduated from Miami University in 1948 with a degree in business administration. He forged a career in the dairy products manufacturing business and was active in the Grand Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Rapids Rotary Club, and served on the board of directors of the Norwest Bank of Grand Rapids.
