Faculty should save all necessary data onto the I: network drive which resides on the server. IF YOU SAVE YOUR FILES TO YOUR C: DRIVE (LOCAL DRIVE), YOU RUN THE RISK OF LOSING DATA IF YOUR COMPUTER FAILS. If you rely on automatic backup systems such as Microsoft's backup feature, please verify your data is properly being backed up - we cannot guarantee your data is retrievable through such systems. Other ways of backing-up your data include saving to CD-R, CD-RW, or Zip disks. Email messages in GroupWise are saved by default to our servers.
At present all the SBA servers are backed up by MCIS. The server's backup starts at 10:00 pm nightly. Each server normally takes between 1 to 3 hours to backup depending on how much has been changed. Sbaserver normally takes 5-6 hours because most changes takes place are on it. The backups are done incrementally. My understanding is that a full backup is done every 3 months then is incrementally (only files that have been changed from the previous nights backup) done nightly, then repeats it every 3 months starting with a new full backup. One warning is that only 3 copies of a file are saved.
Example: If I change a file 4 times last week on 4 different days I can only retrieve back to the 2nd modification, the 1st modification will have been deleted.
The major reason for the server backup is that in case a server crashes and it needs to be rebuilt we can restore the data from the backup. The backup is for all servers including web.
