The Howe Writing Initiative is a collaborative project between Miami University's Department of English and the Farmer School of Business, designed to enhance the quality of student writing in the School of Business. The HWI assists both FSB professors in the teaching of writing and FSB students in the improvement of their writing skills.

On February 23 and March 23, the Howe Writing Initiative conducted portfolio preparation workshops for aspiring FSB students. The Portfolio Program is an alternative process to gain admission to the Farmer School of Business. Since 2006, the program has allowed students whose GPA is slightly lower than the required 3.0 to demonstrate that they have other strengths to contribute. The “portfolio” that they must submit includes three pieces of their writing, including two personal essays in response to prompts and a separate piece completed for a class.
The HWI's portfolio preparation workshops allow students to read and discuss examples of past submissions through instructor-led critiques. Students are encouraged to participate in a dialogue about "what works, what doesn’t, and why." The workshops help students develop broader perspectives about the “particulars” of their unique personal experience, and, by the end, students are able to apply the rhetorical strategies required in a successful essay. In addition to workshops, the HWI staff conducts portfolio-related consultations with students, helping students brainstorm ideas and offering advice on drafts.
Student Organizations and Development director Michelle Thomas first suggested the idea of the portfolio workshop to HWI in Fall 2007, and is a strong believer in its benefits, stating, "These Howe Writing Initiative sessions have been tremendous for our students. The staff members are always accessible and are very effective in helping students develop their writing skills. I have received outstanding feedback.”
