Intro to Best Practices

The HWI proudly announces its Best Practices in FSB, a section of the Howe Website devoted to writing assignments we think represent particularly good models for integrating writing into the FSB curriculum. We have chosen assignments that are rhetorically rich and demanding for students, making connections between disciplinary knowledge and rhetorical expertise. We provide detailed descriptions of the assignment itself, our analysis of why we think it teaches writing so effectively, and comments from both faculty and students about the processes of completing and evaluating their writing.

We plan to continue this program of praise throughout the next two years, hoping to accumulate a set of writing assignments from all departments and across all levels that provide models of writing that enhance students' disciplinary knowledge, rhetorical expertise, and professional/academic writing.

We begin with the Annual Report Project from Accounting 221 and the infamous "In-Basket Memo Exam" from Marketing 335. Our warmest thanks to Clay Hock and Tim Greenlee, and their students during the 2001-2002 academic year, for their willingness to share their thoughts, their assignments, and their experiences. As always, the Howe Writing Initiative welcomes your comments on this gallery of writing assignments, as well as suggestions for what assignments you think should be showcased in the coming months.
