MKT 425B & Chile

During the Spring 2010 Semester the Farmer School of Business will offer a special section of Global Marketing Class (MKT 425) that includes a Spring Break business and cultural excursion in Chile. Chile is a shining star in the Global economy, with an average yearly growth rate of 5.6% since 1990, the highest GDP per capita in Latin America, and business transparency rankings on par with those in the developed world.  The Spring Break schedule combines class meetings, company visits, guest lectures, and cultural tours. Seniors who have not studied abroad: here is a final opportunity! This special section of MKT 425 will still require MKT 291 as a prerequisite.

LA REGION

Latin America is in its fifth year of unparalleled economic expansion with significant investment in logistics and digital infrastructure. The region’s commodity boom is a principal driver behind this growth.

The region has shown vast improvements over the last few years in domestic macroeconomic policies and conditions, reflected by more robust monetary policy frameworks and strong accumulation of international reserves, and it has demonstrated a stronger immune system to financial shocks.

Witness the numerous untapped opportunities that South America has to offer students during a career enhancing and once-in-a-lifetime experience.Unlike Europe and increasingly Asia, which are typical destinations for US business travellers, a South America trip can open new doors in the business world and is the perfect opportunity to understand an extremely important trading partner for USA.

CHILE

In 2007 there was an increase in trade between US and Chile of 8%. Chile is a springboard for US business in South America with multinational firms such as AES Corporation, Unilever, Nestlé, IBM, General Electric, General Motors, Caterpillar, Anglo-American, Barrick, Procter & Gamble, Dole, Liberty Global, Citibank, HSBC, Scotiabank, Coca Cola, Deloitte, Global Crossing, SAP etc. being located in Chile.

Chile is one of the world’s most open economies, being the first country to sign free trade agreements with the USA, Canada, Japan, EU and China. Since US-Chile FTA, US exports to Chile rose 345%. Rule of law, a stable democratic government and institutional quality are keys to the success of this Global economic shining star!

Finally, Santiago was selected as the “Best City for Business” in Latin America by the América Economía business magazine. Santiago was also dubbed the Best City for Business in Latin America by MasterCard Worldwide Research

In Chile, the rugged Andes Mountains, lush wine valleys and beautiful pacific coastline are all within 140km of each other!

Global Marketing Class Includes Spring Break in Chile!

Section B of MKT 425 (Global Marketing) will incorporate a field study trip to Santiago, Chile during Spring Break (departing Friday night, March 6 and returning Sunday, March 15). The focus of the field study tour will be on a day spent at a local enterprise.   Students will be expected to develop a team business problem and collect data for analysis upon returning to Oxford.   The remainder of the time in Santiago will include cultural and tourist opportunities, several business visits, and free time to explore one of South America’s most vibrant cities. The field study tour will cost each student approximately $3000 (financial details are still being finalized), which will include air fare, local transportation, lodging, sightseeing and some meals. All students in Section B must participate in the field study tour. The number of class meetings in Oxford will be adjusted to generate equal contact hours in both sections of MKT 425.
