Courses & Requirements

We are glad that you are interested in the Farmer School of Business International Summer Program China. If you have any questions that are not covered here, please feel free to ask anyone associated with the program.

The International Summer Programs through the Farmer School of Business are open to all majors at Miami who meet the course and program prerequisites by May 2010. Students participating in this workshop will take BUS 399 (3 credit hours), BUS 420 (2 credit hours), and EDP 499 (3 credit hours). Students must complete all eight credit hours. No exceptions are possible.

Prerequisites for the 2010 China summer workshop are junior standing (58+ hours) by May 2010 and a 2.60 G.P.A. by January 2010.

Business students as well as non-business students are welcome. No knowledge of Chinese is required.

A Miami University business instructor and several guest faculty teach the courses. The program lasts four weeks and provides six hours of Miami credit. The daily itinerary consists of class lectures, company visits, and cultural field trips. Orientation programs during second semester provide information and advising to the students enrolled, as well as an opportunity to meet fellow students and the faculty.

Second Semester Expectations

Second semester expectations: During second semester there is a time commitment equivalent to one credit hour that addresses class, cultural, and weekend travel preparations. Please be advised of this expectation in the spring prior to your trip, as it can add to your course workload. The China-Silk Road group will meet most Wednesdays from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Day of the week and room assignment t.b.a. NOTE: There is no registration involved in the spring; all eight credit hours are taken in Summer I.

Courses

Thirty students will be enrolled in this workshop.

BUS 399: Business Strategies in a Competitive Global Economy (3 credit hours)

This course provides a comprehensive study of the Chinese economic system, revealing dynamic changes and diverse industry/area policies. Students will be challenged to understand globally oriented, effective business strategies in the context of Chinese culture and business environments. Students will have the opportunity to observe different companies and conduct varied activities in a professional, business framework in China.

BUS 420: The Environment for Business in China (2 credit hours)  This course is offered on a Credit/ No Credit basis only.

Students will travel from the east to the far west of China, visit different types of companies, take trips to historical and cultural sites, and merge with different group of people and thusly enhance students’ cross-cultural understanding toward economic development and the business environment in China. The goal of this course is to help students gain international experiences and global perspectives on history, culture, and related topics in China in order to build student’s ability to conduct successful business in a global setting.

EDP 499: Culture, Education, Educational Practice and Reform in China (3 credit hours)

The goal of this workshop is to help students gain international experience and perspectives on education and related issues. Students will travel to and visit schools in China, and sit in on lectures from selected Chinese professors. The current educational system and standards of different age groups will be introduced.  The educational practice in meeting these standards will be observed in Chinese schools and through interviews and discussions with teachers and school administrator.  Cultures in different regions within China will also be observed.  These observations will also be compared with that of the US in order to gain new perspectives and to better serve students in the United States.  Additional small group meetings and informal interviews with teachers, students and parents will be conducted to increase understanding of the observations and lectures.
