This workshop presents a study in comparison and contrast, as the group visits three powerful Asian nations. You will study in Beijing and Shanghai, China; Seoul, South Korea; Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan; and Hawaii. Guest lecturers are prominent professors and industry practitioners in the region. Field trips include the corporate facilities of world-renowned companies such as Procter & Gamble-Beijing, Petters Group Worldwide–Shanghai, General Electric–Korea, LG Electronics–Korea, Papa Johns–Korea, Toyota Motor HQ–Japan, Panasonic Electronic–Japan, Asahi Brewery Automated Plant–Japan, and IT/Tax consulting firms such as Deloitte & Touche–Korea and Ernst Young–Tokyo. Complementing these business visits are tours of historical and cultural sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City*, the Temple of Heaven* in Beijing, Jade Buddha Temple* in Shanghai, Humble Administrator’s Water Garden* in Suzhou, Zhouzhuang Water City near Shanghai, Korean Demilitarized Zone, Gyungbok Secret Palace* in Seoul, Gold Pavilion Temple*, Niji Shogun Castle*, Rock Garden Temple*, Kiyomizu Water Temple*, and A-bomb Peace Museum in Hiroshima.

There will be organized opportunities in Korea and Japan for students to meet English-speaking students as well as Miami alumni.

In Hawaii, students study the business environments of the Pacific Rim countries at the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii. The group also visits Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center. This program will take 30 students.

  • Costs: Projected tuition and fees paid to Miami are subject to change.
    • Program fee: $6,200.00. Covers airfare, all intra-country transportation, many meals, housing, entrance fees, etc.
    • Tuition: In-state $3,684.96. Out-of-state may be $5,964.88. Subject to change. REDUCED: Out of state tuition has been reduced for all 2009 FSB Summer Study Abroad programs.
  • Participants: Limited to 30 students. Priority will be given to rising seniors and business majors.
  • Prerequisites: Junior standing (58+ hours by May 2009) and a 2.60 GPA (by January 2009).

  • Pre-departure meetings: Attendance is mandatory attendance. Topics address cultural, historic, and economic topics as well as travel tips. Accepted students will meet spring term on Mondays from 5 – 7 p.m.
  • Scholarships: Farmer School of Business scholarships are available to help with the tuition cost for those who show need.
