This workshop presents a study in comparison and contrast, as the group visits three powerful Asian nations. You will study in Beijing and Shanghai, China; Seoul, South Korea; Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan. New this year the program will visit the Winter Olympic 2018 PyungChang Alpensia ski resort-Eastern coast.  Guest lecturers are prominent professors and industry practitioners in the region. Field trips include the corporate facilities of world-renowned companies such as Procter & Gamble-Beijing, General Electric–Korea, LG Electronics–Korea, Papa Johns–Korea, Toyota Motor HQ–Japan, Panasonic Electronic–Japan, Asahi Brewery Automated Plant–Japan, and IT/Tax consulting firms such as Deloitte & Touche–Korea and Ernst Young–Tokyo. Complementing these business visits are tours of historical and cultural sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City*, the Temple of Heaven* in Beijing, Jade Buddha Temple* in Shanghai, Humble Administrator’s Water Garden* in Suzhou, Zhouzhuang Water City near Shanghai, in Korea, World EXPO 2012 in YeoSu (Southern Port) on Korea-Southern coast, Jeju Island (A candidate for the UNESCO World 7 National Wonders)* Gyungbok Secret Palace* In Japan, Gold Pavilion Temple*, Niji Shogun Castle*, Rock Garden Temple*, Kiyomizu Water Temple*, and A-bomb Peace Museum in Hiroshima.

There will be organized opportunities in Korea and Japan for students to meet English-speaking students as well as Miami alumni.

  • Information Sessions: Monday, December 5, 2011 from 5:00 to 6:00 in 1035 FSB.
  • Application deadline:  CLOSED. Please visit again for the 2013 applications.
  • Costs: Projected tuition and fees paid to Miami are subject to change.
    • Program fee: $6,300.00. Subject to change.  Covers airfare, all intra-country transportation, many meals, housing, entrance fees, etc.
    • Tuition amounts: In-state $4,122.60. Out-of-state may be $6,677.00. Subject to change. REDUCED: Out of state students receive reduced tuition when studying through this program.
  • Participants: Limited to 30 students. Priority will be given to rising seniors and business majors.
  • Prerequisites: Junior standing (58+ hours by May 2012), MKT 291 (by May 2012) and a 2.60 GPA (by January 2012).

  • Pre-departure spring meetings: Attendance is mandatory attendance. Topics address cultural, historic, and economic topics as well as travel tips.  Meeting times will held on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in 2041FSB.  Students are not to schedule any spring classes during the spring meeting time as these sessions are mandatory for all participants. 
  • Scholarships: Farmer School of Business scholarships are available to help with the tuition cost for those who show need.   No application as all students are automatically checked for eligibility.
  • Paid internship opportunity in Seoul following the program (PENDING): June 15-August 15, 2012.  Three students from the Pacific Rim program will be eligible to apply for this unique international internship with LG. LG offers free housing with a host family and about $2,000 stipend for the month. Internship decisions are made during the program in consultation with Dr. Lee. More information to come regarding this pending opportunity.
