Courses & Requirements

The International Summer Programs through the Farmer School of Business are open to all majors at Miami who meet the prerequisites by May 2010. Students participating in this workshop will take BUS 373 (3 credit hours), ECO 320 (3 credit hours), and BUS 420 (2 hours). Students must complete all eight credit hours. No exceptions are possible.

Prerequisites for the 2010 Pacific Rim summer workshop are junior standing (58+ hours) by May 2010, and a 2.60 GPA by January 2010. Please note that priority will be given to rising seniors for this program. Thirty students will be enrolled in this workshop.

Second semester expectations

  • During second semester there is a time commitment equivalent to one credit hour that addresses the Pacific Rim classes, cultural, and weekend travel preparations. Please be advised of this expectation in the spring prior to your trip, as it can add to your course workload. NOTE: There is no registration involved in the spring; all eight credit hours are taken in Summer I.

    Pacific Rim will meet most Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 p.m. DO NOT SCHEDULE A CLASS DURING THAT TIME.

  • During second semester 2010 students will also enroll in JPN 105, East Asian Language for Travelers. The international summer program office will register you and cover its cost. Following are brief descriptions of the courses and the faculty.

Courses

BUS 373: Doing Business in Pacific Rim Countries (3 credit hours)

Prerequisites: Junior standing (58+ hours by May 2010) or permission of instructor.

This course acquaints students with issues and problems of successfully conducting business in the Pacific Rim countries. Students learn about the habitat, cultures (history, religion, society, and living condition), economy, technology, and business practices of far-east Asian countries China, Korea, and Japan. Also addressed are many of the cultural issues and Asian peculiarities of doing business under dramatically different operating conditions and strategic environments. This increases students’ understanding about international business and enhances their business adaptability.

ECO 320.C: Comparative Law and Economics (3 credit hours)

Students will learn about how the legal systems in other countries affect the economic performance of markets. Focusing on property, contract, torts, and the legal process students learn how and why markets work both similarly and differently in Far-East Asian countries. The course uses reading, class discussions, company visits, and case studies to increase students' understanding of international markets. Prerequisite: ECO 201.

BUS 420: The Environment for Business in Pacific Rim (2 credit hours)

Students will learn about the practices of international business and human resource management in Pacific Rim countries such as China, Korea, and Japan, through research and hands-on field trip experiences to well-known international firms such as P&G, Toyota, Ernst &Young, LG, and Papa John’s International, and through interaction with prominent business leaders and scholars in the region.
