Why Study Abroad?

In order to truly become the next business leaders of the world, students need to be exposed to other cultures. Businesses have expanded into the global marketplace, and companies are focusing on job candidates who have studied abroad. Overseas experience enhances the participants’ development into more open-minded and self-reliant individuals. Travel experiences have greater professional value when undertaken in the context of study in one’s chosen field.

Since 1986, the Farmer School of Business has offered study abroad opportunities around the world. These programs have allowed many Miami students and faculty to observe and reflect on business and market relations between the U.S. and the rest of the world. Having a college study abroad experience has also opened doors for many of our alumni to travel professionally or work and live comfortably around the world.

The rising influence that China plays in the world markets and economy cannot be ignored. Thus the Farmer School of Business continues to establish, encourage, and support more and more opportunities for study in China and Asia. First-hand exposure to the fastest-growing economies of the world gives our business majors preparation for doing business globally.

Consider studying abroad with the Miami University’s Farmer School of Business for these reasons.

These programs enable students to:

  • Analyze the global business environment within a geographical context;
  • Experience other cultures by living in another country for a period of time (program lengths vary);
  • Witness the myriad ways in which a country’s culture is reflected in its business practices;
  • Hear presentations by business, government, or academic leaders from the host countries;
  • Visit sites that provide the context for understanding history, culture, and current events;
  • Complete Miami Business requirements.
  • Realize that after their study abroad exposure they are comfortable traveling to other countries and want to do so professionally.
