The International Programs through the Farmer School of Business are open to all majors at Miami who meet the prerequisites. Students participating in this workshop will take BUS 399 (4 credit hours).
Prerequisites for the winter break Southeast Asia workshop are sophomore standing (30+ hours) and a 2.60 GPA. Please note that priority will be given to rising seniors for this program. Twenty students will be enrolled in this workshop.
First semester expectations:
During first semester there will be pre-departure meetings that require mandatory attendance. These meetings will address background learning and travel tips.BUS 399: The Business and Cultural Environment of Emerging Asian Powerhouses (4 credit hours)
This two week winter workshop is designed to provide FSB students the opportunity to learn about the business and cultural environment of a major emerging market in Asia —the fascinating nations of Vietnam and Cambodia. Participants will learn about the economics, business practices, and important industries of this rapidly developing economy, in addition to its culture. Students will be assigned a student partner in Vietnam National University, Saigon, and will exchange e-mails from late fall semester to work on a business case. Instruction will be through lectures, readings, and field trips.
Major topics will include:
Principles/Theories of International Business
Trade Barriers/Free Trade Zone/Asian Trade Blocks
Entry Strategies to Vietnam
Cultures:
Habitat (geography, living environment, and weather)
Summary histories and their impact on the Asian business/economy
Religions and their impact on society and business practices
Asian life (family/food/transportation/living condition/leisure)
Economic Environment:
Current economic conditions and exchange rates
Business Environment:
Business practices/etiquettes and selected FDI (foreign direct investment)
Political /other Environment:
Countries’ political systems, Vietnam’s accession to WTO in 2007, and copyrights/Intellectual Property Rights
