Undergraduate Program

Building toward the capstone

During those first two years, students also begin to explore the various business disciplines. They start with a calculus course freshman year and add economics, accounting, statistics, management information systems and communications courses during sophomore year.

In their junior year, students begin focusing on their major. Core courses in finance, business law, management, marketing, and international issues provide a solid background for all business majors.

The senior capstone course pulls everything together, integrating the various aspects of a student’s undergraduate education. Examples of capstone projects include consulting for a small business or a nonprofit organization, mapping out a complete advertising campaign, or designing an interactive media program.

In keeping with Miami University’s commitment to a broad-based undergraduate education for all its students, our students spend most of their freshman and sophomore years exploring a wide variety of subjects through the Miami Plan. This approach provides a foundation in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and fine arts.

What would you ask them?

Several times each semester students have the opportunity to hear leaders of business or government discuss timely topics. Recent speakers have included retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and top executives of Xerox, GE, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, International Paper, and Nestle Brands USA.

Minor Details

Students who want to major in another field but want a business complement can choose from a variety of minors in business disciplines or can enroll in the six-week Summer Business Institute.
