The Supply Chain Management Society
Like other majors, SCM prepares student for careers in a variety of
industries and professions. But as with any career in
business, the learning can't stop upon graduation. Many professional
organizations exist to support continuing education and professional development
after graduation. The Supply Chain Society is a student organization that
maintains student affiliations with three such organizations related to careers
in Supply Chain Management. Student members of the SCM Society join the
Institute for Supply Management, the Council for Supply Chain Management
Professionals, and APICS: The Association for
Operations Management. All three are international organizations recognized
professionally for their cutting edge research and continuing education in
Operations Management, Logistics, Purchasing, Planning & Scheduling,
and Inventory and Materials Management.
The SCM Society provides programming that facilitates the transition from
student to professional. It schedules
speakers from industry to speak on campus, tours
factories and other facilities, travels to meetings
and conventions for all three organizations, and generally networks
with these organizations. Student members are eligible for scholarships
sponsored by each organization, as well as paper
competitions. The group has toured facilities or attended conferences in 8
states over the past 5 years. This organization is sponsored by a grant from the
Chrysler Foundation. The faculty advisor for the SCM
Society is Professor Rocky Newman. He can be reached at
