Being named Attorney of the Year by the Carl B. Rubin Legal Society has special meaning for Cincinnati attorney Todd Bailey, a member of the Farmer School’s business law faculty.
Bailey, an attorney with the regional firm of Frost Brown Todd LLC, counts the late Judge Carl Rubin as one of his role models and most effective teachers. In Bailey’s own teaching, he tries to challenge and engage his students in the same way that the longtime federal judge challenged him.
“Judge Rubin was an important influence in my life and on the development of my trial skills when I was a young lawyer in the 1980s and he was serving on the federal bench,” Bailey said. “He had very high expectations and standards, and gave me the opportunity to become a better lawyer; not every judge does that. He was one of my most important teachers, although that instruction took place in the courtroom rather than the classroom.”
Bailey is the third attorney to be honored with this award since the establishment of the Carl B. Rubin Legal Society by the Jewish National Fund in May 2007.
“We are honored to have Todd Bailey as our 2009 Attorney of the Year recipient,” said society vice president Jon Lieberman. “He is a terrific attorney and has garnered the highest of accolades, both locally and nationwide.”
Bailey graduated from Miami University in 1973 with a degree in political science. Since earning his J.D. from Duke University Law School in 1976, he has become an experienced litigator in the areas of intellectual property (IP), trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, and products liability. He has written and presented on a variety of issues and has earned a national reputation. His civic contributions include work with Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor and the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund.
Though Bailey has focused on litigation for much of his career, he felt a strong urge to teach such subjects as IP and ethics, and returned to his undergraduate alma mater several years ago to share his knowledge and challenge students to wrestle with difficult issues.
“A good lawyer is a good teacher,” said Bailey. “And to me, teaching is the most important mission I can undertake.”
The award will be presented officially at the Carl B. Rubin Legal Society gala on Nov. 15, 2009. For more information, call the Jewish National Fund regional office at 513-794-1300 or email mfabian@jnf.org.
